90th Anniversary – Charles Town Kiwanis!
June 2, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm$30.00
Club President Liz Cook announces that the 90th anniversary of the Charles Town Kiwanis Club will be celebrated on Thursday, June 2 in the ballroom of the Clarion Inn (Shepherdstown). The Kiwanis Club was born at Rouss Hall in Charles Town on June 4, 1926. The charter members of the Charles Town Kiwanis Club had a strong commitment to make Charles Town and the surrounding area a better place to live. Such commitment has been passed through the generations. Kiwanians, then and now, voluntarily respond to the challenge to improve their community by assuming personal responsibility for humanitarian and civic projects that public authorities are unable to perform. Thus, members establish enduring friendships fostered by service.
Since 1926, Charles Town members have worked to champion community needs such as the construction of the original Bloomery Bridge across the Shenandoah River, construction of Charles Town General Hospital, and even the development and upkeep of Jefferson Memorial Park. The club’s membership is especially dedicated to children through school-oriented Sponsored Youth programs, community Easter Egg hunts, special needs fishing derbies, Little League sponsorships, the Haunted Fairgrounds, academic recognitions, scholarships, and its iconic Santa’s Toy Workshop.
Dr. Rocco C. Cipriano, member of the Charles Town Club and Past Distinguished Governor of the West Virginia District of Kiwanis International, will present a program at the Anniversary celebration in remembrance of the club’s original 42 charter members. These were men of character who endured significant hardships. Many were born during or just at the end of America’s Civil War and their childhood memories were often influenced by the era of reconstruction. Others were child immigrants searching for a better life on a foreign shore in a land of hope and promise. Others came of age and fought for our freedoms during World War I. They returned to establish businesses and careers that were soon impacted by the Great Depression. Still, they strove to succeed and become the business, social, and civic heartbeats of our Charles Town community. In 1926, each of them answered the call to serve through Kiwanis.
On June 2. we invite you to join with us, hear their stories, and celebrate 90 years of Kiwanis service in Charles Town. The evening begins with a cocktail reception (cash bar) at 6 pm, followed by a buffet dinner at 7pm. Spouses and guests are also invited. The cost for the evening is $30 per person payable to the Charles Town Kiwanis Club. We kindly ask for your RSVP by May 25.
